Why

Because the wait is a choice, not bad luck. LA spent seventy years building for cars. The time you spend standing at a stop is what that decision feels like. Three things would fix it: streets that don't kill people, trains that show up soon, and service you can actually plan your life around.

Safer

In the city of LA, car crashes now kill more people than homicides. In 2025 it was roughly 290 traffic deaths to about 230 homicides, and that's the third year in a row it's gone that way. The city promised to get traffic deaths to zero by 2025 under Vision Zero. An audit in April 2025 said it failed, basically for lack of anyone being in charge. Every trip that moves from a car to a train is one less chance for someone to get hurt. A good metro isn't a nice-to-have. It's the biggest safety program the city could run.

Faster

Speed gets built, it doesn't just happen. The Vermont corridor is one of the busiest bus routes in the country, and it's finally getting bus rapid transit, aimed at the 2028 Olympics, with about 66,000 riders a day expected. The plan to turn it into an actual rail line? The study pencils that in for after 2067. A kid born today would ride that train in their forties. The Sepulveda subway through the pass got approved in January 2026 and won't open before 2033. Faster means grade separation, real frequency, and not letting "someday" count as a schedule.

More reliable

Reliability compounds. One 40-minute gap teaches someone to buy a car, and every rider who leaves makes the next service cut easier to justify. Metro carries about 719,000 weekday boardings and has put down around 72 lane-miles of bus lanes, but ridership still hasn't gotten back to 2019. The fix is boring and well known: bus lanes that actually get enforced, signal priority, and a train or bus every ten minutes or better, all day. Service you don't have to think about.

So why the little guy?

La Espera stands in stations because that's where the promise either gets kept or doesn't. The glow is the line that should be serving that spot. When the trains are safe, fast, and reliable enough that nobody has to stand around waiting, the figures come down. That's the whole ask.
